Regardless of whether no one listens to what I say or reads what I write. Regardless of whether I'm just another lone voice, I can continue to exercise my right to use my voice, without it generating any serious repercussions that threaten my integrity as a human individual and citizen. Okay, even a citizen living on the margins of society, still a human being. So, it wouldn't even matter what I write, but I can continue writing and publishing, if I wish, without waiting for the thought police to come and get me in a patrol car. At most, dissenting opinions and heated debates emerging. Because I no longer envision a perfect world in which everyone will learn to think and disagree, but never with common sense. Let them do so, because they too have that right in this imperfect world we live in. That's always been important: keeping this door to freedom of speech open. This little bit of participative democracy we have, but it's also its essence. Because if we can't open other democratic doors, let's at least preserve this one. Better a little than nothing...
